Meanwhile, they pushed a car sitting at the Amoco station out of the way. The owner, Robert Wallington of Newport News, kept his distance. "They didn't have to make me get out," he said. "The car can go up, but not me." Campbell said firefighters took all the precautions they could. "We stabilize the situation and keep people back.

And we're prepared in case of explosion." After they did that, he said, a cleanup crew from Oil Transport took over, spreading clay pellets and shoveling up the mess. Firefighters, meanwhile, aimed a large hose down a manhole to flush out the storm sewer. The fire marshal described the spill as small. "There was no evacuation and no danger to the public," he said. pft tit Memory of jfo Brencta JM.

Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. ComptfwJ by Ylnkj R. Williamson 1 1 By Felice Belman Daily Press NEWPORT NEWS A gasoline spill forced Newport News fire officials to close off several blocks of Jefferson Avenue below Briarfield Road for four hours Saturday afternoon. No one was hurt, and only a small amount of gasoline flowed into the storm sewer, according to R.L. Ware city fire marshal.

The spill happened around 11:10 a.m. The driver of a tanker truck was filling his gasoline tank at an Amoco station, 5606 Jefferson when it overflowed. Firefighters estimated about 100 gallons of gas ran down the driveway of the gas station, according to Capt. D.G. Campbell.

A cleanup crew from the company that owns the truck, Oil Transport fig Victim injured in JCC carjacking JAMES CITY A 28-year-old man reported that he was carjacked on Richmond Road Thursday night by a man who flagged him down and jumped in when he slowed. The victim said he had just left his uncle's house in the 8600 block of Richmond Road, said Capt. Ken Middlebrook of the James City County police. The robber ordered him to drive, said he had a pistol, then told him to get out of the 1987 Chrysler sedan, Middlebrook said. The victim tried to escape from the car with the keys, causing a struggle during which his left arm was cut and scraped, Middlebrook said.

He finally managed to break free and fled without the keys, Middlebrook said. Police found the car parked at Camp and Richmond roads and arrested Jarvis B. Williams, who was standing nearby, Middlebrook said. "Williams stated that the driver was his cousin, but he didn't know his name," Middlebrook said. "He said the driver started acting strange and then jumped out." Williams, 25, who gave his address as a post office box in Charles City, was charged with robbery, abduction and use of a firearm, Middlebrook said.

Wanted man hit in drive-by shooting JAMES CITY A 20-year-old James City man was wounded in a drive-by shooting on Diascund Road Thursday night and then arrested on several outstanding warrants. Antonio Rodgers, of the 200 block of Ivy Hill Road, told police he was with some friends in the 8200 block of Diascund when a car drove by and fired five shots at him, said Capt. Ken Middlebrook of the James City County police. One bullet hit him near the knee and came to rest by his ankle bone, Middlebrook said. Friends took him to Williamsburg Community Hospital, Middlebrook said, where he was in stable condition Friday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Rodgers was wanted for several firearms violations in New Kent County, said Lt. Joe McLaughlin of the New Kent County Sheriffs Department. Information about the charges was not immediately available, McLaughlin said. Police have no suspects in the shooting. Rodgers was unable to give any description of the car or provide the names of any of the friends he was with, Middlebrook said.
