Contemporary music. 116 Daily Press, Sunday, Nov. 3, 1985 Diana Ross 9 new album wimpy; Eddie Murphy really can sing By JORY FARR "Do features Murphy on a Wonder ballad. He doesn't miss a note, and -the song is all Motown sweetness. Also check out the dreamy vocals on "I Wish (I Could Tell you When)." aJBlBileBlBlBllBIIBllHIBllBlllBl "Get the Best Meal HOME for the Best Deal" TOMMY'S COOKING I his isn an album with a whole lot of excitement; Murphy just doesn't have the pipes to compete with the likes of Won Eaten Alive Diana Ross RCA What's with Diana Ross? She's got a terrific voice, but her solo LPs are rarely exciting.

True, she comes through with a few thrilling tunes in recent years, like "Endless Love." But you usually have to wade through a lot of drek to get to the gems. For some reason, Diana rarely has been able to sound as passionate as she did with the Su-premes, probably the greatest female pop group ever. Sad to say, "Eaten Alive," her More contemporary music is on Page H8. The good news is that Eddie Murphy can sing. Sam Cooke or Jeffrey Osborne he's not, but "How Could It Be" has its moments thanks to some songwriting help from Stevie Wonder and singingproduction courtesy of Rick James.

James produced, wrote and sings backup on the first single, "Party All the Time," and Murphy's sounds best on this funky dance-rock number. This is the kind of slick, punchy soul that Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey got on last year's "Easy Lover." RESTAURANT 3406 W. Mercury Blvd. Hamolon. VA 23666 CX7 H.

Where do you get a chance to show off your chops these days? Why, heavy metal, of course. There, the guitar is king. The long, flashy solo reigns supreme always will. Which explains why Yngvie Malmsteen, a tremendously talented guitarist, expends his considerable skills in the high wattage mine fields of metal land. I mean, here is a guy who can play difficult, complex classical guitar with perfect clarity and crystaline tone he even teases us with some beautiful nylon string etude on this platter but chooses instead to hot-dog it on standard head-banging fare.

This doesn't make much artistic sense, but then Yngwie's got to: make some bread, and he's picked heavy metal as the surest bet. As metal goes, "Marching Out'1 is really good, with plenty of. stinging guitar, and Malmsteen's got a voice that's much better than most metaloid crooners possess. In terms of energy, the band reminds me of the old Led Zeppelin. "Don't Let It End" has a catchy hook and a sizzling solo, and "Disciples of Hell" has a classical guitar intro that would put a smile on J.

From beginning to end, this is a mediocre LP, filled with wimpy songs and third-rate disco.

The title track, "Eaten Alive," is pure trash: lame lyrics and innocuous music. "Chain Reaction" is an attempt to reprise the joyous spirit of the old Su-premes, but the song's just not strong enough to make it work. Meanwhile, on the rest of the album, Ms. Ross tries desperately to give the music an edge by singing each tune in a husky, breathy voice, as if she's waiting to be seduced at any moment. One has to assume this is producer Barry Gibb's idea of excitement (he also had a writing hand on every song).

If so, the man should not be allowed to produce records any more.
