A lifelong James City County resident, he was a former saw mill operator and farmer and was instrumental in the beginning of the Farmers' Market, Duke of Gloucester Street, Williamsburg. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Elsie Stewart Slater; three daughters, Mrs. Edward Tzula of Toano, Mrs.
